There is a reason why this song is over 20 years in the making: At less than 3-and-a-half minutes, with a vocal which enters inside 20 seconds, a strong chorus which comes in within 30 seconds, a catchy groove and lyric and solid hooks, this is arguably the very best ToB song; and, as a pure, guitar-based 'pop' song, it is possibly the song which best sums up the band. As such, even after the band embarked on its current project of releasing singles regularly, (this is the 21st new release in 3 years and 3 weeks!), it was decided the song should not be added too soon to the band's ever-evolving release schedule.

The song is about starting afresh and trying to manufacture and then grasp an opportunity to change the course of one's life for the better. As the opening chapter of the story told by a collection of songs mostly written in the band's 2002 'compositional golden period', Life Starts Today lives alongside the other previously-released songs, Here It Goes, Giveaway, This Time, Just Another Day, Hoboken Morning and Never Let You Down Again.

From its birth in 2002, Life Starts Today existed as only a rough demo recording until recording proper began in 2006. However, with the band's ensuing 8-year hiatus, no further progress was made until, in the autumn of 2018, Keiron and Kevin began recording afresh. After the addition of Jason's bass and the piano part at the beginning of 2019, the song once again went on the back-burner. Then, after it was added to the band's release schedule at the end of 2022 and scheduled for release in 2023, finishing the song began in earnest in March of 2023, with Keiron recording a new lead vocal and then mixing the track.
